EV Applications

Bourns provides a broad range of reliable products ideal for electric vehicle (EV) applications. The portfolio features hybrid GMOV components with engineered MOV-GDT pairings, ChipGuard® MLC automotive ESD protectors with low capacitance and a fast response time, BMS signal transformers with AEC-Q200 compliance, and SMF4L-Q transient voltage suppressor diodes that are AEC-Q101 compliant. Additional Bourns components for EV applications include MF-USMF and MF-NSMF Multifuse® PTC resettable fuses with AEC-Q200 compliance as well as a wide selection of inductors and resistors. Bourns automotive products are reliable, effective, cost-effective, and manufactured in accordance with the IATF 16949:2016 standard.

Current Sense Resistors

Bourns High-Powered CSS Current Sense Resistors come in both 2-terminal and 4-terminal options and are manufactured using a metal element. Each family has a range of low resistance options and power ratings of up to 50W with resistance values as low as 0.05mΩ. These resistors detect and convert current to an easily measured voltage that is proportional to the current through the device. Bourns Current Sense Resistors offer high measurement accuracy and cost-effectiveness compared to other technologies.

Battery Management System

Bourns Battery Management Systems (BMS) manage the state of health (SoC) while charging and discharging battery systems. BMS components feature shunt resistors, high-voltage signals, power transformers, and shielded power inductors. Current sense resistors are AEC-Q200 qualified with a continuous current of 1000A and a low 50µΩ resistance. Bourns signal transformers include common-mode chokes for noise rejection for BMS applications. The shielded power inductors and high creepage high clearance (HCT) transformers are suitable for automotive power conversion, DC-DC converters, power supplies, and communication electronics.

CO2 Emissions Reduction Component Solutions

Bourns Automotive CO2 Emissions Reduction Component Solutions are designed to meet the automotive industry's needs to reduce CO2 emissions for environmental reasons. One such solution is micro-hybrid vehicles that use a stop-start system and regenerative braking to help reduce CO2 emissions. Micro-hybrid applications use a 48V starting motor that can restart the engine quicker than a 12V starter. The starter/generator requires a DC/DC converter to efficiently change the alternator output voltage from 48V to 12V in order to charge the battery. A DC/DC converter is also needed to convert the battery voltage from 12V to 48V in order to drive the starter motor. High-powered inductors and current sense resistors can provide the low DC resistance (Rdc) characteristics needed for power conversion and supply requirements, making them important for efficient DC/DC converter designs in automotive applications.

CSM2F High Power Current Sense Resistors

Bourns CSM2F High Power Current Sense Resistors are available in four footprint sizes: 6918, 7036, 8518, and 8536. The series offers resistance values as low as 50μΩ, continuous current up to 1000A, and permanent power ratings of up to 50W. These inductors are AEC-Q200 compliant with a high pulse power rating. The metal alloy current sensing element allows thermal EMF as low as 0.25μV/K and low TCRs of 50ppm/°C in the 20°C to +60°C temperature range. Bourns CSM2F High Power Current Sense Resistors detect and convert current to an easily measured voltage that is proportional to the current through the device. These resistors complement Bourns circuit-conditioning components, such as power inductors and rectifier diodes.
